Sony Pictures Classics is nearing a $2 million deal to acquire worldwide rights to Paul Weitz’s road trip movie “Grandma,” which stars comedy legend Lily Tomlin in performance that is already garnering awards buzz, an individual with knowledge of the negotiations has told TheWrap.
A representative for Sony Classics did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Julia Garner co-stars as Tomlin’s granddaughter, who shows up at her door with an emergency that requires money. The two women proceed to kick up a storm all over town as they ask Grandma’s old friends and flames for the dough.

The supporting cast includes Marcia Gay Harden as Tomlin’s daughter, as well as Judy Greer, Laverne Cox and Sam Elliott.
Wait wrote, directed and produced the film, which was also produced by Andrew Miano, Paris Latsis and Terry Dougas. Executive producers were Stephanie Meurer, Dan Balgoyen and Danielle Renfrew Behrens.

“Grandma” will mark the second Sundance acquisition for Sony Classics following its purchase of Marielle Heller’s “Diary of a Teenage Girl.”
WME Global is negotiating the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.
